St Giles High Street curves gently away from St Giles Circus and Centre Point for about a quarter of a mile to become High Holborn, where once three theatres stood: the Duke's (burnt down 1880), the Holborn (closed 1887) and the Empire (bombed 1941). The High Street, bypassed since the mid-19th century by New Oxford Street, traces the line of the north boundary wall to the 12th-century Leper Hospital of St Giles, fanning out as it reaches High Holborn to take the form of a medieval marketplace. The hospital chapel was demolished In the aftermath of the dissolution of the monasteries (1539), and the present - very beautiful - Portland-stone church of St Glies-in-the-Flelds, designed by the Palladian Henry Flltcroft, architect of Woburn Abbey, was consecrated in 1733. It was here that actor-manager David Garrick of the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, married Eva Marie Violetti in 1749.
The Shaftesbury Theatre is sited on the eastern angle between Shaftesbury Avenue and High Holborn, some 200 yards to the east of the church. In 1640 the English divine and poet George Herbert wrote, ‘No sooner is a temple built to God, but the Devil builds a chapel close by’, a sentiment echoed in August 1838 by the young Mary Anne Evans - later to write magnificently as George Eliot - who In those early days considered the theatre to be sinful. So it is that St-Glles-in-the- Fields is destined to keep a benevolent watch on the more wayward late arrival. Between the two is a series of dull blocks including, in particular, Endeavour House, accompanied by an excess of concrete paving and young trees. Buildings of interest, if not of great moment, close to the theatre include Alton House with its glazed modern façade and the local council’s own Berkshire House.
As is so often the case, in order to build the theatre a small block of run-down properties, including a pub, had to be demolished. The developers were Walter and Frederick Melville, whose Popular Playhouse Ltd would present melodrama at the New Prince’s Theatre (as the Shaftesbury was first known) when it opened on 26 December 1911 with a presentation of The Three Musketeers. The architect commissioned to design the building was Bertie Crewe, a pupil of Frank Matcham’s who never succeeded in crossing that delicate bridge between brilliance and genius, particularly so far as exterior design and massing is concerned. Faced in terracotta, brick and stone, the three-storey Renaissance façade of the theatre, while elaborate in detail, is essentially two-dimensional, with the insubstantial crowning cupola above the curving entrance bay less than enhanced today by an internally lit modem canopy.
The long, rather narrow, foyer and booking hall, with its pretty ticket office, is restrained in the use of decoration, only to open into an auditorium of spectacular French Renaissance richness. Two tiers of paired bow-fronted boxes, framed by giant Ionic columns, flank a segmental proscenium arch. Above the boxes an arched tympanum contains figure groups displaying personifications of Tragedy, Comedy, Poetry and Music, along with painted roundels depicting rural scenes. The theatrical periodical The Era of 23 December 1911 Identifies the interior decoration as cream and gold with side panels In autumnal tints. It also draws attention to the domed ceiling, which is sadly now ominously austere in its lack of decoration, but was originally highly ornamented with ‘symbolic groups’. The present colour scheme of pale peach and cream, touched with gold, Is not unsympathetic to the architecture.
The theatre has seen good times and bad. In 1916 the management was taken over by Seymour Hicks, but it was C. B. Cochran who staged successful productions of Gilbert and Sullivan operas between 1919 and 1924. George Robey managed the theatre for a short time from 1927, and in 1961 Jack Hilton purchased the freehold. A year later the building was bought by Charles Clore and EMI, who renamed it the Shaftesbury Theatre in 1963. In 1973 the auditorium ceiling collapsed following the successful production of Hair (described as a Tribal Love Rock Musical), but the Greater London Council’s pressure to have the building listed, together with the efforts of the Save London’s Theatres Campaign, turned the tide against demolition. Since the theatre's restoration, successes have included Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell with Peter O’Toole (1991) and Dear Ralph, starring Ralph Bates, Bernard Crlbblns and Sandi Toksvig (1994).
In the entrance foyer a polished timber panel records the formation of the Theatre of Comedy on 8 May 1983, founded by Ray Cooney with members including Wendy Craig, Judi Dench, Maureen Lipman and Geoffrey Palmer. The show had a troubled start: the announced opening in May was postponed to enable “more creative time”, and it finally opened four months later, with previews from August 15th. Top billing was given to Jerry Hall, in the small and somewhat insignificant role of the mother of the bride. However, just eleven days after the Press Night, Jerry Hall withdrew from the show, suffering from glandular fever. (Exactly one year earlier Jerry Hall had left the cast of “My Darlin’ Janey” at the King’s Head, again suffering from glandular fever.) Her role was taken over by her understudy, Ali Mclnnes. Originally announced for a six-month run, the show closed on January 21st 2006 after just 15 weeks. (plus)

Commentaire: Margaret Mary Kaye’s 1978 novel “The Far Pavilions” became a world-wide best-seller, and was described as “a ‘Gone with the Wind’ of the North West Frontier”. In 1984 the novel was adapted into an epic three-part TV mini series starring Ben Cross as Ashton, Amy Irving as Anjuli, and featuring Omar Sharif, Christopher Lee, John Gielgud, Robert Hardy, Saeed Jaffrey and Rupert Everett. It was another huge success with world-wide sales. When her permission was sought to turn the work into a musical, M.M. Kaye publicly wondered if this would not be a step too far. She died, aged 95, just as rehearsals began for its musical premiere. Several critics did, indeed, claim this was an adaptation too far. However, it was so splendidly vulgar, with lavish costumes, a sung-through score, an endlessly revolving stage-set, a touch of the Bollywoods and some gloriously over-the-top performances, that the overall reaction was one of pleasure. Notes: Inspired by a story in the weird and wonderful “Weekly World News” in June 1992, which claimed a “Bat Boy” half-boy, half-bat, had been found living in a cave, the musical opened off-Broadway in March 2001 for an 8 month run. The script and score were heavily revised for the UK production which was first staged at the West Yorkshire Playhouse. The book deals with serious themes (such as hypocrisy, acceptance, forgiveness, racism, revenge and scape-goating), but all too often punctures any underlying serious satire with slapstick, surrealism, camp-horror and irony. With only one or two exceptions, it was hated by the critics. “This asinine, pretentious and self-admiring musical is one of the most repulsive shows I’ve ever seen” (Sunday Times). There was some praise for Deven May, the American performer who re-created his off-Broadway performance in the UK. It ran just four months. (plus)

During its tour Toyah Wilcox caused some disappointment to her fans and discontent among some provincial managers when she suddenly left the show to appear in “I’m a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here”. However, the extra publicity from the television show persuaded the powers-that-be to bring the show into the West End. It was criticised for its touring scenery, and inevitably Toyah Wilcox was compared unfavourably to Doris Day in the film version, but all in all her performance was mostly praised, though the show itself had a luke-warm reception. Commentaire: This Canadian musical opened in Toronto in March 1994 to great success. The London production had Olivier Award winner Francesco Zambello from the opera world as director, Jonathan Tunick’s orchestrations and both Paul Baker and Uwe Kroger alternating as Napoleon. (Uwe Kroger performed three shows a week, Paul Baker doing the other five.) However, it ran just under 4 months. It was one of the early pioneers of Sunday performances and although weekends were sold out, the rest of the week was thin. With 32 in the cast and an orchestra of 28, producers cited the high running costs as the main reason for closure which came on February 3rd. Generally the original notices had been hostile, and, of course, most could not resist using the phrase “Not tonight, Josephine” as advice to the readers. (plus)
Presse: SHERIDAN MORLEY for TELETEXT wrote a positive review, saying, "Well, what a surprise. Just as West End musicals were going minimalist and dark along comes the most lavish, over-the- top extravaganza since Ivor Novello dropped dead in King's Rhapsody in 1951. True, Napoleon is not all that good. But director Francesca Zambello.... has thrown everything at it. Tosca and Traviata combined have nothing on what is happening here."
BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES was not impressed, saying the show had "music that often went tum-tum, lyrics that regularly went plonk-plonk, and rhymes that sometimes left me wishing no such thing as rhyme had been invented". He ends his review, "As it is, there's only one answer to the question of whether this new musical is stronger and more enjoyable than the year's other Gallic offerings. Not tonight, Josephine."

Last night's opening presented us with two and three-quarter hours of hammy historical hokum, diversified by a couple of moments that served to indicate what might have been if anyone around had had any taste." He goes on to describe the score as "Talentless" and the lyrics "Dire". He was however impressed by the set design, describing it as "slick and fluent ", but says, "...man cannot live by sets alone."
CHARLES SPENCER FOR THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "The show is a shameless attempt to cash in on the vast box-office success of Les Miserables. Unfortunately it seems like a dismally pale imitation, with almost none of the drama or thrilling theatrical spectacle." He goes on to say, "Williams's score is a non-stop parade of churning, ersatz-emotional anthems that go straight in one ear and out the other without troubling the brain, heart or memory, while the triteness of Sabiston's lyrics often beggars belief."

Commentaire: This show had opened with a six-week off-Broadway try-out in February 1996. Sadly its composer, Jonathan Larsen died of a heart attack, aged 35, on the night of its final dress rehearsal. He did not live to see its Broadway premiere in April, followed by rave reviews, a Pulitzer Prize for Drama, three Tony and several other awards. The show ran for 5,124 performances. The London production received very mixed notices ... “saccharine, ghoulish stuff’, “ moments of a yearning, tentative, lyrical love”, “the finale and the musical itself will haunt me beautifully”, “a cracking good show with some terrific songs”, “Being rude about “Rent” is a bit like drowning a cuddly kitten, for the show is so desperately determined to be cute and winning, with every sexual minority slickly catered for”. Commentaire: This was a completely re-written version, with many changes from the version that ran for just three months in the West End in 1979. The writer-director, Des McAnuff, had softened the story of the young boy who loses all his senses when , at the age of four, he witnesses his father killing his mother’s lover. Unable to communicate, abused by his family and the town louts, he somehow becomes a pinball wizard. Eventually he recovers his senses and develops into a messianic superstar. At the end of the show he returns to the bosom of his family. The production was notable for many stunning stage and lighting effects.
Die-hard Who fans complained that this version removed all the passion, fire and rage of the original, written at the time of Woodstock and the Vietnam War, when the only solution to the ills of society was to drop out. However, this version had opened to ecstatic reviews on Broadway in 1993 and ran for 899 performances . This spectacular London revival received very mixed notices, although there were rave notices for newcomer Paul Keating in the title role. It came off after just under a year, with a considerable financial loss - but shortly after it closed it won three Olivier Awards (Outstanding Musical, Best Director and Best Lighting). (plus)

However well intentioned the piece, the critics unanimously agreed the whole show was a total, confused mess, offering trite lyrics, and bland and dull music. However, the show had been performed with enormous success throughout Japan. (plus)

Commentaire: This production was nominated for two of the most prestigious Olivier Awards (equivalent of the Broadway Tony Awards) for Best New Musical (it was one of only two shows nominated!) and Best Director of a Musical, the latter of which placed Ken Hill against Simon Callow and Judi Dench.
Ken Hill’s comedy musical predated Andrew Lloyd Webber’s version by two years. In fact, it was said that the 1984 production at the Theatre Royal, Stratford East was the inspiration for Lloyd Webber’s later world-wide success. In this version the music is provided by Verdi, Offenbach, Gounod and the like, with irreverent lyrics by Ken Hill. From the opening when the ballet mistress misses her step and shouts “Shit”, to the finale where the dying Phantom gasps enough breath for an overlong swansong, this is clearly a very different show to the Lloyd Webber one. This is a camp journey via an enormous codpiece on Faust’s tights, and a chandelier that collapses on top of the soprano (“Well that’s cured her nodules”). Comparing the two versions of the story was said to be choosing between cod and chips and smoked salmon - both very tasty dishes. It had a four month run. (plus)

Commentaire: The show had originally been produced on Broadway April 4th 1971 with a cast including Dorothy Collins, Alexis Smith, Gene Nelson and Yvonne de Carlo. It ran for 522 performances with critical success, but was such a large-scale show that it never recovered its production costs and ended up making a loss.
Cameron Mackintosh insisted on a number of revisions for this London premiere, and scenes were re-arranged, numbers cut, and new numbers written. The London show, too, was a critical success (though not a financial one) but ultimately Sondheim preferred the original New York version, and from then onwards it is the Broadway version that is the only one available for performance. Among a number of cast changes at the end of the first year, Millicent Martin took over from Diana Rigg and Eartha Kitt replaced Dolores Gray. (plus)

Fin 1962, le théâtre subit une rénovation en profondeur. Il a réouvert le 28 mars 1963 sous un autre nom: le «Shaftesbury Theatre» (un autre du «Shaftesbury Theatre» avait existé plus haut dans l'avenue, mais avait été détruit par un bombardement en 1941).
L'ouverture se fit le 28 mars 1963 avec la création londonienne du «How to succed in business without really trying».

De juin 1944 à mars 1945: les bombes volantes V1 et V2, le retour du Blitz
A partir de juin 1944, Londres a été soumis à des attaques de fusées V1. À l’apogée de la période, plus d'une centaine de V1 par jour ont été tirés sur Londres et le sud-est du pays, avec un montant total de 9.521 attaques (!!!). A partir de septembre 1944, s’y sont rajoutées les fusées V2 beaucoup plus puissantes — et ce deuxième «Blitz» a duré jusqu'à ce que le dernier site de lancement en Allemagne ait été envahi par les armées alliées en mars 1945. Le bilan des morts et des destructions a été très élevé et a conduit à la deuxième longue période de fermetures des théâtres dans le West End.

Commentaire: Il s’agit d’une version révisée de «Sally», qui avait été présentée à Broadway le 21 décembre 1920, pour 570 représentations, puis au Winter Garden à Londres à partir du 10 septembre 1921, pour 387 représentations. La production originale de Londres mettait en vedette George Grossmith, Dorothy Dickson et Leslie Henson.
Cette version révisée avait transférée à l’époque édouardienne (1901 à 1910), et était très attendue car elle allait être le retour à la scène londonienne de la très populaire Jessie Matthews. Quelques semaines après l’ouverture, face aux bombardements de la seconde guerre mondiale et aux nuits plus sombres, le spectacle a été présenté à 17h30 chaque soir, sans représentation le vendredi soir.
Le spectacle a fermé le 30 janvier 1943 et est parti en Irlande du Nord dans le cadre d’une tournée du Theatre War Service Council. (plus)

«The Wildflower» fut un grand succès à New York, ouvrant ses portes en février 1923 pour 477 représentations. La distribution originale comprenait Edith Day et Charles Judels. Une production australienne en 1925 avait connu un succès semblable, et les Australiens Kitty Reidy et Howett Worster avaient donc été importés pour le spectacle à Londres. Mais en Angleterre, le mélange de comédie musicale et d’opérette n’a pas séduit. En oplus cela n'a pas aidé de devoir jouer en pleinr la grève nationale en mai 1926. Le théâtre change de nom en 1914
Le "New Prince's Theatre" devient le "Princes Theatre", tout simplement.
Ouverture du "New Prince's Theatre", le 26 décembre 1911
Le théâtre a été conçu pour les frères Walter et Frederick Melville par Bertie Crewe et a ouvert le 26 décembre 1911, avec une production de «The Three Musketeers», sous le nom de « New Prince’s Theatre». Les frères Melville espéraient en faire un foyer pour le mélodrame populaire et les pantomimes, le voyant comme un théâtre frère du «Lyceum Theatre», théâtre à succès à l’époque (d'où provient d'ailleurs le «The Three Musketeers» d'ouverture).
Il avait une capacité de 2.392 places et une scène de 31' 10" (9,70m) de large par 31' (9,50m) de profondeur. Le «New Prince’s Theatre» a été le dernier théâtre construit sur la Shaftesbury Avenue et est situé relativement loin du centre du quartier théâtral, près de la New Oxford Street, ce qui explique peut-être les nombreux flops au cours des premières années.
